Providing up-to-date information and resources to learn about and manage Malignant Hyperthermia.

Malignant Hyperthermia is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition triggered by exposure to certain anesthesia medications. This condition causes a rapid increase in body temperature and severe muscle contractions, which can be dangerous if not promptly treated. Malignant Hyperthermia is typically an inherited condition, and individuals with a family history of this disorder should inform their healthcare providers before undergoing any surgical procedures that require anesthesia. Prompt recognition and treatment of Malignant Hyperthermia are crucial for a positive outcome, so healthcare teams must be prepared to manage this condition should it occur during surgery.

“Two Lives”: A Poem by Melissa Domiati

This poem is a recounting of a near-death experience from MH that Mrs. Domiati experienced a number of years ago. After extensive rehabilitation, she seems to have no motor deficits. Her writing is inspiring and unique.

“The Angel in My Pocket” by Sukey Forbes

MH without anesthesia is very uncommon and not often reported. I recently read a very moving book describing the death of a 6-year-old girl from two episodes of “awake MH” some years ago, and how the mother worked through the emotional devastation. I highly recommend the book, The Angel in My Pocket, by Sukey Forbes, […]
